MEMPHIS, Tenn: The Memphis community is mourning after a man shot by a DEA agent during an arrest attempt at a Burger King in the Frayser area has died from his injuries. Authorities identified the man as 41-year-old Darrin Pigram.
According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the incident occurred just before 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Burger King near North Hollywood Street and James Road. Members of the Memphis Safe Task Force, working alongside federal agents, were attempting to serve an arrest warrant when the situation escalated.
Investigators say agents approached Pigram inside or near the restaurant when he allegedly reached toward a firearm in his waistband. A DEA agent then opened fire, striking him. Pigram was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.
In a statement following the shooting, the DEA described Pigram as armed and dangerous with a violent criminal history. However, some witnesses and Burger King employees questioned whether he was carrying a weapon at the time of the confrontation.
Family members expressed heartbreak and called for a fair and transparent investigation into the events that unfolded. Barbara Thomas, who identified herself as Pigram’s aunt, urged authorities to carefully review all evidence, surveillance footage, and witness statements.
Community members also shared sorrow over the loss of life, with some noting that Pigram was known within local church circles and had shown a different side of himself to those who knew him personally.
The TBI confirmed that agents are conducting an independent investigation into the shooting. Evidence is being collected, witnesses are being interviewed, and the findings will eventually be submitted to the Shelby County District Attorney General for review.
Authorities stated there is no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation continues.
